Free Condoms?
January 29, 2006 at 2:34 am | In Uncategorized | 23 CommentsIn lecture three there is a discussion based on what is culturally acceptable versus what is acceptable. I found a good example of this when I was talking to my friend who attends D’Youville College, for those of you not familiar with Buffalo, it’s a private catholic college. I was telling him about this class, and he said that it sounded interesting and how he wished his school offered a class similar to this one. As we continued talking about the differences between my public non-catholic school and his private catholic school we noticed many more differences.
While UB doesn’t promote sex, it stresses how important safe sex is and has condoms readily available for its students. However, at D’Youville there are very few, if any, condoms available to its students, and sex is a subject that is not discussed within the confines of a classroom. On the other hand, UB offers a couple of other classes about sex, and human sexuality. While UB students tend to be more informed about sex and allowed to freely decide whether they want to engage in sexual activities or not. D’Youville have very few resources available to them within their school grounds, they are simply taught that sex before marriage in unacceptable. D’Youville also doesn’t allow males and females to stay in each others rooms over night, where at UB this is allowed.
This relates back to lecture because what is culturally acceptable at UB is considered taboo at D’Youville College, which is not that far away. Although D’Youville has a completely different set of morals than UB, the same activities take place on both colleges campus. Although D’Youville doesn’t “promote” sex and sexuality as UB is claimed to do.

[...] This is a response to the blog entitled Free Condoms. Sex is a topic that always has been considered taboo to talk about. I know that in my household growing up, sex was never really mentioned. I learned about it on my own. We took a few different health or sex ed classes throught school but they never really got too deeply involved with what sex really is about and the consequences. I found the classes completely useless, since by the time I took them, I already pretty much knew everything they talked about. If anything, it seemed like those classes tried to discourage students from having sex, but in most cases that did not work. Instead, they should help kids understand the consequences of unprotected sex. [...]

[...] In “Free Condoms,” the issue of UB distributing condoms to the students was addressed, and I feel that it is a realistic and proactive action. Kids have sex no matter where you go, its common knowledge at this point. For schools to ignore it as an issue is ridiculous. While I don’t feel that every school should be handing out condoms to their students, I can’t help but think that maybe condoms should simply be free to the public. It could potentially cure the world of many STD’s, unwanted pregnancies, as well as other problems. In the end though the economy wins and the condom industry is one that profits greatly. [...]

In response to “Free Condoms” I think that condoms should be available to college students (even if they have to show there UB card) and to the public for that matter. Having sex in today’s society is no shocker. Many people are participating in this activity and many of them are college students. Kids learn about sex more on the streets these days and from their friends rather than at home. If children were properly educated maybe, there wouldn’t be so many babies having babies and STD’s to worry about. But if one chooses to have sex and they can’t afford to buy condoms or they are afraid to purchase them then they should feel comfortable and able to come on campus or to a clinic and be able to receive free condoms to use. I believe this way is smarter and hopefully many would use it. I know I would, even if you just picked a few up as backups just in case. Universities such as UB have the wellness center where you can go and request condoms, and the morning after pill (as long as you’re a UB Female student). I don’t know why other colleges or schools wouldn’t want to implement the same program.
As for the issues that are and aren’t covered or spoke of on D’Youville Colleges’ campus I think by UB having classes that focus on sexual and hot topics about this issue (like this class)and recognizing that people are going to have sex without marriage, they are doing their part in providing what their students need. I mean it’s college…. people are going to have sex whether it’s on a catholic campus or not so by having the proper information and “equipment” needed it a fair way to help your students and society out by keeping them cleaner and protected against any diseases or unwanted pregnancies.

[...] I attended a catholic school for nine years and although it was not during the raging hormone years of high school they still had plenty to say about sex. I do not feel that sex should be discussed throughout the school, but in a certain class that deals with sex. In religion class we did not discuss that the bible says that sex is only permissible when procreating. Sex was saved for health class where safe sex was stressed and taught. Although this is a totally different atmosphere than a college I feel that this blog post is somewhat misleading. [...]

We are a fun loving couple, but we just happened to be addicted to sex, sex games, phone sex and random encounters. We are very safe; although we tend to go to the extreme with our experiments. We are willing to try just about anything as long as it is safe (exp…anal, oral, submission, bondage…). Swinging is our lifestyle.
